Now Alina will enter a lavish world of royalty and intrigue as she trains with the Grisha, her country’s magical military elite—and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling. He believes Alina can summon a force capable of destroying the Shadow Fold and reuniting their war-ravaged country, but only if she can master her untamed gift.

As the threat to the kingdom mounts and Alina unlocks the secrets of her past, she will make a dangerous discovery that could threaten all she loves and the very future of a nation.

i read this after six of crows (oops) and although it wasn’t as incredible as the duology, i still absolutely enjoyed it!!

Great read

You won’t be able to put it down!

Loved it!!

The beginning was a bit slow but once you got into it, the plot started getting better and better! Cant wait to read the next book!

gloomymilkboi

disappointed.

This book had so much potential, and i thought i'd like it at some point but i was unfortunately proven wrong. I feel like the character relationships could have been better formed, they felt so rushed, forced, and kind of thrown together. The story would slow down to tell us what was going on internally with Alina, but then as soon as she was interacting with someone else, things felt like they were moving WAY too fast (with the exception of a few scenes and her relationship with Genya). I usually like when books start to pick up speed, but this book just wasn't it for me. There was nothing really special about it, and it really didn't do anything for me. The plot was ok, but at the same time i feel like it was more a character driven book. Character driven books should have CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT & this one barely had any, the only thing that changed about Alina was her appearance. Her appearance changed for a significant reason, but i feel like internally, she would feel a certain way and then make impossible break throughs without developing much. I hope I like the 2nd book better, but i heard this book was the best in this specific trilogy....yikes.

I have a short attention span

I can see why Netflix is making a series. I have a really short attention span and no patience for underdeveloped characters or plot holes. So I usually end up putting down a book in a few hours of reading but not this one. Honestly the writing was really good. I had read the six of crows duo and really liked it. So I gave this a chance. Can I just say that a lot of the main female characters I read are not that developed but Alina was very developed. Her character was even likable. I love how her childhood was incorporated. And that chapter at the end when she saves her mans *chefs kiss* I was hoping that would happen. Very satisfying. Anyway, I’m about to go read the next one. We’ll see if I like all the twists :)) -G

Shadow and Bone

A solid 4 read. I love Leigh Bardugo as person and as writer. Having read six of crows before this book I was little taken a back by the writing style you can definitely see a vast difference between shadow and bone and six of crows with her growth in a good writing. I loved the world but the main character had me wanting screaming at the page this is pretty generic plot with generic tropes but enjoyable all the same. Definitely a good read to get you out of a reading slump and great for beginner Fantasy readers!

Reading for the second time

It has been years since I last read this book. It was just as good the second time as it was the first. I am looking forward to seeing the book come to life in April on Netflix. I have high hopes that they will do it justice.

Promising

Very strong start to the series, but not my favorite. Something was just missing for me. However, I still feel Leigh Bardugo is a talented writer and plan to finish the series and read her other books.

Great 📖

I read the whole series and I loved it so much I had to read six of crows and the crooked kingdom another Leigh bardago book.

Better Than I Thought

The Grisha series, while a bit formulaic, has some elements that made it much more entertaining that I expected. 1) The world building and the magic system were well thought out. The culture was very prevalent and undoubtedly the best part. 2) Alina was one of the more enjoyable MCs in YA. The other characters, however, were not very unique. I did enjoy the development of Alina and the Darkling, but not Mal. 3) The plot was pretty standard, but I’m very intrigued by the ending and will continue to read on! Overall, highly and entertaining easy read, though not nearly as good as Six of Crows.

FANTASTIC

heartbreakingly good

LunarValk

Meh

Save your coin. I bought this years ago and forgot I even read it. Just another love triangle YA formula read with some magic and incorrect Russian thrown in. C’mon now.....at least get the basics right.

Great book

Loved it! Can’t wait to read Book 2!

Good

This is my type of genre, the plot was great and I loved the story, but in times it could be cliche not that it’s a bad thing. Otherwise good book, I loved it.

Tory Brennan

Ok but not amazing...

I read it and enjoyed it, but then I started to think about it and it was not that good. The story was interesting, but the author tried making it revolve around the romance, I like a good romance, but this was not that good of a romance. Since she failed the romance she kinda ruined the whole thing, because it was mostly focused on the romance. *SPOILERS* Alina is all obsessed with Mal, and I’m like understandable (he was her friend, but her being in love was too classic), but she can have fun without him. Mal was not in love with her. Then, she is the sun summoner and here comes the darkling. He was mysterious and I knew they were going to fall in love. The problem was they barely had him or developed his character, so the love story was flat. Then here comes Mal, Alina is “betrayed” by darkling, and she suddenly is perfect with Mal... and I was quite disappointed with the love story. It was quite a lot like red queen, but the *SPOILER FOR RED QUEEN* Maven’s betrayal was a lot more dramatic and intense. *END OF SPOILERS* So, it revolves around a flat love story... it would of been better if the focus was less on Alina and her crushes and more on the plot and storyline. But they should’ve developed the darkling more, he had a lot of potential that went kinda to waste.

*til death do us part*

About Half Of It Was Good

Overall, this was a good book. I can see why it’s popular and I can see why it’s getting its own Netflix series. That being said, despite the imaginative world, intriguing magic system, and historical setting, I can’t shake the feeling that this book is just like every other YA fantasy series. The protagonist *seems* strong because she’s in the military, but really she spends the entire book getting kidnapped, bossed around, and beaten up in training. The romance *seems* well developed but in reality Alina falls for an eternal psycho after speaking to him 5 times (not to mention the fact that he ignored her and wasn’t even around for half the book. Real heart throb right there... *rolls eyes*) and then she leaves him (because his mama said to leave) for her sleezy best friend who NEVER liked her romantically until he got jealous. Being best friends since childhood is not an excuse for actual romantic development. Having a crush on a character is not romantic development. Yes, Alina always liked Mal but he literally just woke up one day and realized she wasn’t as ugly as he thought. The last thing that bothered me is that this book is genuinely JUST another YA trilogy. Like the Hunger Games, like Divergent, like Frostblood, like Red Queen, like the Cruel Prince (which I loved but still... it’s a trope). Shadow and Bone is just another YA series about a weak, ugly teenager with an attitude who becomes strong and beautiful, and then overthrows a corrupt leader while scoring the hottie of the cast. We have read this story again and again and again and for some reason it’s accepted like it’s really something new and amazing. Lastly... I know this story is supposed to take place in an old Russian setting (I think) BUT I found myself disappointed in the lack of diversity. SURE not many people of color lived in Russia during the era this is supposed to have taken place (and probably not many live there today) but I doubt many Darklings or Sun Summoners or other magical freaks lived there either. If we can picture pretty teenagers shooting light from their hands then I think we can picture brown people simply existing too. Like I said, this book was good *overall* but there are things I just couldn’t get over and enjoy. Maybe if you’re 14 you’ll love this but I am well past that age therefore my enjoyment is limited haha

Good plot and description of the

personas, characters, surroundings, details etc. smooth writing style. A pleasure to read.

Nothing Special

The world that this book is set in is actually very interesting and complex. However, the protagonist is very bland. Not to mention a little dumb. She spends the first half of the book repressing herself (due to feelings stemming from a boy, how nice) and then when she finally lets go, she can’t even do anything useful. All of this build up for how she is going to save the world and she can what, make a bubble? Dispel some shadows? But really, my biggest problem with this book is that it’s nothing but her getting kidnapped. It’s dressed up as something new and exciting but make no mistake this is just another variant of a damsel in distress, only this time her exceedingly pretty yet boring boyfriend gets to share in on the victimization. This happens not once, not twice, but three times!! And each time she just gives in to the captors. Very frustrating—she does not even use the extensive and difficult fighting training she got from the little kingdom. I think that she was only given the training in the first place to appease the female readers who prefer a strong lead. In the end, cool world, cool mechanics, BAD characters.

CorenneParks

A few cool concepts swimming in a sea of tired tropes

In which we spend 3/4 of a story contemplating beauty, the privileges it confers, sharp cheek bones, alabaster skin blah blah blah. Also a boy gets jealous. Oh and a boy overlooks the love of his life until said love undergoes complete transformation, a la that crappy 90’s movie with Freddie Prince Junior that was so boring and bad I can’t be bothered to look it up. Also the mousy turned hot heroine is the chosen one (because apparently 2 played out tropes are supposed to cancel each other out or maybe transcend themselves into originality?). Oh wait, I remember now: She’s All That, which was about as good as this novel.

Shadow and Bone

I’ve read a lot of fantasy books and so far none of them have really made me want to read the rest of the book. Usually I just read the first couple chapters for the beginning and then read that last charters and then move to the next book. But Shadow and Bone kept me reading and hooked me even in the prolog of the book. This deals with love and action and is just amazing.

Flame ffffffff

Only 400 pages

The book was said to have over eight hundred pages but the book ended after a little over four hundred but other than that it was a good book

bbgardener

The perfect bit of binge reading.

Compelling and heart warming. Dark and beautiful.

Nickdat

Heroine is so stupid, makes the whole book awful

The heroine is stupid. The author goes way to far in having her reject her own inner power, it is infuriating. Would not purchase again

Very good Book.

It was really good I read it in one night! But I accidentally fell in love with the bad guy.

AliviaAverin

Perfect

Alina’s story is captivating and original. The strong female character and the perfect villain are brilliantly thought up and supported by the other characters. The suspense and magical element of the story makes it perfect for lovers of mysteries and the paranormal, while the foreign aspect of the culture makes it seem like ancient folklore. I highly reccommend this book if you enjoy a strong female character, magical flair, and folklore of any kind.

Wow

This book had me on the edge of my seat! The day I bought Shadows and Bones, I stayed up all night and read the whole thing. I wish the 3rd would come out already!! But love this book!

Lyn Forester

Good read

I really enjoyed this book. Alina’s journey from childhood to adult is quick and to the point. It’s enough of a background to allow the reader to understand her actions in the upcoming adventure. The storytelling is beautiful, the imagery compelling, with just enough vagueness to allow the read to fill in the blanks. I especially loved the points in the story when Alina learns that changes happen, accepts them, and moves on. The decisions she makes are not always the “right” decision, but she owns the outcome and is able to think for herself and grow as a person. I look forward to the next book in the series. *Originally posted on goodreads
